Artist Book
The limited-edition artist book re:connections (2021) features 18 contributions by graduates in the CalArts programs in Art, Art and Technology, and Photography and Media, as well as an introduction by Tatum Howey (Critical Studies MFA 21). It is an 8.75 x 8.75”, 96-page, Smyth sewn paperback with a foil stamped cover, edition of 100.
Across two spreads and an index each, MFAs reflect on their artistic practice in the past two years—before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. re:connections offers unique insights into process: from research materials and correspondence, to in-progress and finished works.
Printed by Conveyor Studio, the publication’s concept, design, editing, and sequencing were collaboratively realized by the exhibition’s executive committee, with guest editors Zoe Strauss, Courtney Loi (Critical Studies MA 21), and Matthew R. Bussa (Critical Studies MFA 20).
The book was released in February 2022 at The Mackey Apartments in Los Angeles. The event, hosted by MAK Center, culminated in a panel discussion among CalArts visiting faculty, Guggenheim Fellow, and conceptual artist Zoe Strauss; Tatum Howey, PhD candidate at UCSD; curator Audrey Min; and School of Art faculty Ashley Hunt.
re:connections (2021) is found in over 15 international libraries and special collections.
